Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters

Renew Your Certification

CoreCHI™ and CHI™ certifications are valid for four years from the date when CCHI granted the credential. Individuals who are granted a CoreCHI™ or CHI™ certification must meet the following certification renewal requirements within this four year period:

  • have 40 hours of work experience (divided in 20 hours per a two-year cycle), and
  • complete 32 hours of healthcare interpreter continuing education (divided in 16 hours per a two-year cycle).

As long as the individual completes these requirements and submits their online renewal applications, the individual will not need to retake CCHI’s examinations. CCHI's online renewal application process includes two (2) applications, each for a two-year cycle, and payment of corresponding application fees.

For detailed instructions please review these links and the corresponding section of CCHI Candidate's Examination Handbook:

All certified interpreters will need to submit online two applications for renewal of their credential (one per each two-year cycle), proof of continuing education, and applicable fees at least one month before the renewal of the credential is due. If a Core Certification Healthcare Interpreter™ or  Certified Healthcare Interpreter™ practitioner does not submit their renewal applications before expiration of the credential, they will be automatically removed from CCHI’s roster and registry of certified interpreters, and will need to reapply and retest. The implication is that the interpreter will have no credentials until he or she goes through the entire process of applying and retesting.

Why is Certification Renewal Necessary?

CCHI acknowledges that technological and logistical changes within the healthcare interpreter profession occur at a relatively slow pace. At the same time, interpreting skills require continuous practice to be maintained at an adequate level. CCHI established specific credential renewal requirements in order to assure that certified interpreters keep abreast of the profession’s development and, at a minimum, maintain their skills at the level achieved at certification.

The CCHI continuing education and work experience requirements provide a mechanism for CCHI certificants to fulfill their responsibility to maintain interpreting skills and competence, to prevent professional obsolescence, and allow for their professional growth and mastery of skills. All certificants are required to satisfy the continuing education and work experience requirements as a condition of continued certification. These requirements are intended to enhance the continued competence of certified interpreters.
