Overview and Mission

Founded in July 2009, CCHI is a national nonprofit organization, operated as a 501(c)(6) corporation, whose mission is to operate a national, valid, credible, and vendor-neutral certification program for healthcare interpreters. Our purpose is to develop and direct a comprehensive certification program for healthcare interpreters in order to assess their competence and to help ensure quality of interpreting in any healthcare setting and in any modality of interpreting. CCHI brings together representatives from national and regional non-profit interpreting associations, language companies, community-based organizations, educational institutions, healthcare providers, and advocates for individuals with limited English proficiency (LEP).

CCHI serves the current and future needs of healthcare interpreters and the stakeholders (healthcare providers and institutions, language services agencies, government agencies, and patients with LEP) who are counting on us to provide a trained, qualified, and certified population of healthcare interpreters.

CCHI programs include the Core Certification Healthcare Interpreter™ (CoreCHI™) and Certified Healthcare Interpreter™ (CHI™) certifications.

The target audience for CCHI’s certification program is a healthcare interpreter at an entry-level position defined as:

A person who is able to perform the functions of a healthcare interpreter competently, independently, and unsupervised in any setting and in any modality where health care is provided, with the knowledge, skill, and ability required to relay messages accurately from a source language to a target language in a culturally competent manner and in accordance with established ethical standards.

 

CCHI is the first organization certifying healthcare interpreters to receive NCCA accreditation.

The National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA) accredited the CoreCHI Certification (2014) and the CHI™-Spanish Certification (2012) affirming that the exams were developed in compliance with the NCCA’s Standards for the Accreditation of Certification Programs. This is an outstanding achievement, strong and clear recognition of CCHI’s leadership and great news for healthcare interpreters, healthcare providers and other stakeholders.  For example:

  • Healthcare providers utilizing CCHI-certified interpreters can be confident that they meet The Joint Commission accreditation requirements.
  • CCHI certification holders can be proud that their certification now has the same professional status as nurses, respiratory therapists and other NCCA accredited certification programs.

According to the U.S. Census, more than 25 million people speak English less than very well and may be considered limited English proficient (LEP).

Healthcare providers across the country are increasingly treating LEP patients. According to reports commissioned by the National Health Law Program:

  • 80% of hospitals encounter LEP patients frequently
  • 81% of internal medicine physicians treat LEP patients frequently
  • 84% of federally qualified health centers (FQHC) provide clinical services daily to LEP patients.
