About Us:Policies

 joy-world-medCCHI Certificants and Supporters,

2017 was a challenging and busy year for all of us. In a year of political upheavals, uncomfortable revelations, and natural disasters, many of interpreters that have been certified by CCHI were personally affected by hurricanes and fires this year. We hope the relief measures we offered helped in restoring their lives.

As healthcare interpreters, we all worry about changes in the U.S. healthcare system. Over 500 interpreters participated in the “Helping Ourselves While Helping Others: Civic Engagement Toolbox for Healthcare Interpreters” webinar, because for interpreters, standing on the sidelines is not an option if we want to be serious about language access in health care and the professionalization of the healthcare interpreting field.

2017 was also a year of growth. We are proud of our 3,300+ certified interpreters. Every time a healthcare interpreter decides to get certified is an opportunity for them to take their career to new heights.

In 2017, CCHI continued to support professional development of healthcare interpreters by offering free and low-cost continuing education (CE) webinars that are accessible to all interpreters, by maintaining a conference listing page, and by offering other educational resources on our website. CCHI has accredited numerous quality training programs and healthcare interpreter conferences through our CEAP program making the opportunity to obtain continuing education easier for interpreters both certified and on the path towards certification. Lastly, but most exciting of all, we had the opportunity to establish and award the first round of Discover Healthcare Interpreting scholarships to nine CoreCHI™ candidates. We will continue these activities in 2018.

As the CCHI Chair, I want to express special appreciation to our supporters: companies such as Fluency, Inc. and MARTTI, who helped launch the Discover Healthcare Interpreting Scholarship program. I am also grateful to our Commissioners who volunteer their time, efforts, and financial contributions, and to our webinar presenters who share their expertise with our community of interpreters, as well as to our dedicated staff and raters. Most of all, I am grateful to all our CHI™ and CoreCHI™ certified interpreters who have trusted CCHI – the first national healthcare interpreter certification program to earn accreditation by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA).

I anticipate that 2018 will be another busy year for CCHI. Among a few of the projects slated for 2018 is the CoreCHI™ enhancement and our new website. We invite you to get connected with us through our social media channels to stay informed and be the first to hear about opportunities to get involved!

I wish you all Happy Holidays! May 2018 bring you and your family joy, peace, and health.

WASHINGTON, February 1, 2017— As a national certifying organization that values the principles of diversity, inclusiveness, and fairness, the Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters (CCHI) is extremely concerned about the impact of the executive order signed by President Trump on Friday, January 27. The order suspended refugee admissions with an indefinite ban on Syrian refugees, banned travel from seven Muslim countries for 90 days, and placed a cap on refugee admissions of 50,000 people in 2017.

The U.S. has a long and proud tradition of welcoming immigrants and protecting refugees. Healthcare interpreters are part of this tradition. Many patients served by certified interpreters are newly arrived refugees and immigrants. Moreover, many of our colleagues, the healthcare interpreters that serve these patients, are also immigrants and refugees. Healthcare interpreters and providers work together to provide patient-centered, culturally competent care to patients regardless of their health literacy, immigration status, or overall fluency in English. Thus, we improve health outcomes for these vulnerable patients. Across the country, we see this success playing out through close collaborations between resettlement agencies and area healthcare organizations. At CCHI, we contribute to those collaborations by setting the nationally recognized standard for quality in healthcare interpreting.

We urge the new administration to reconsider its Executive Order on Immigration and Refugees. We believe this policy will do more harm than good. It breaks down communication between people across cultures and nationalities–that is, the core value of a diverse society and the profession of healthcare interpreting.

 joy-world-medColleagues and friends of CCHI,

2016 was a difficult year for many of us, and we do not know what 2017 will bring. However, I know one thing, we have work to do!

Regardless of any changes that happen in the healthcare landscape, we will remain dedicated to our mission of administering a national, valid, credible, and vendor-neutral certification program.

We are committed to the professionalization of healthcare interpreting. It is our duty and pleasure to provide educational opportunities to all healthcare interpreters. As your Chair, I am excited to see the growth of our CEAP program. All of the trainers and presenters who are on board with CCHI deserve a special thank you from all of us.

I also want to thank every interpreter who became certified with us and every interpreter who put effort into continuing education in 2016. You are CCHI. What you do everyday benefits patients and healthcare providers in many incredible ways!

As this challenging year draws to a close, we at the Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters think about all we are grateful for. We are grateful for your support, trust, and loyalty. We are grateful for our growth and development as an organization which is responsive to the needs of our stakeholders.

On behalf of CCHI's Commissioners, staff, volunteers, continuing education providers, and advisers, I wish you and your loved ones a wonderful Holiday Season and a New Year full of peace, happiness, health, and professional growth.

AddCCHICCHI is dedicated to supporting professional interpreters who value the power of education and certification. We understand that many interpreters work across settings – in health care, courts, Workers’ Compensation, schools, etc. At the same time, many interpreters are also professional translators. Our 2016 national Job Task Analysis (JTA) study showed that about 8% of respondents – CCHI certificants – also hold another language professional certification, e.g. of ATA, RID, state or federal court interpreter, etc.

We commend and support all professionals who seek certification in more than one specialty! CCHI waives its application fee of $35 for those applicants who otherwise meet our eligibility criteria and who already hold a certification of ATA, RID, BEI, Federal or State courts, state of Washington for medical interpreters, or NBCMI. All applicants must sit for and pass CCHI’s certification exams to earn CCHI certification.

In addition, in February 2017, CCHI started to offer to such applicants a special examination fee of $150 for either CoreCHI™ or CHI™ exam. We are extending this offer throughout 2018 by request! This means that Spanish, Arabic and Mandarin interpreters, who hold certifications by ATA, Federal or State courts, state of Washington for medical interpreters, or NBCMI, will pay only $300 for their certification with CCHI. And interpreters of other spoken languages or ASL will pay only $150 total.

Amplify your impact – add CCHI certification to your credentials!

Who is eligible

Application fee waiver ($35):

  • Any applicant who meets all of CCHI eligibility requirements (see at www.cchicertification.org/44-certification/eligibility-criteria/90-eligibility-criteria) AND whose certification by ATA, RID, BEI, Federal or State courts, state of Washington for medical interpreters, or NBCMI is in good standing (active) on the date of their CCHI application. (e.g. An applicant submits an application to CCHI on 2/26/2017, and their other certification expires on or after 2/26/17, they qualify for the waiver. If the applicant’s other certification has expired before 2/26/17, they must pay the full fee.)
  • Applicant must have completed 40 hours of healthcare interpreter training (as part of our eligibility requirements).
  • The applicant must pay the CoreCHI™ examination fee at the time of the application. CCHI will not consider applications without the exam fee payment.
  • This offer starts on 02/20/2017 and does not apply retroactively. CCHI reserves the right to discontinue this offer at any time and without any prior notice.

  • Candidate’s application must meet CCHI’s criteria. If the application is rejected due to ineligibility, CCHI will retain $35 processing fee and refund $115 to applicant. If your application is accepted, the $150 fee is non-refundable. Candidate must take the CoreCHI™ exam within 6 months of the application approval, otherwise they will have to pay the exam fee again.
  • Candidates who pay the fee of $150 for the oral performance CHI™ exam between 02/20/2017 and 12/31/2018 (by 11:59 pm EST).
