About Us:Annual Report

You may have heard the latest buzz around “accreditation” of certification programs, but what does it all mean? Just as healthcare interpreters work hard to get credentialed as “certified healthcare interpreters,” certification programs can also “get certified!” The process is called “accreditation” and, today, it is administered by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA), the accreditation arm of the Institute for Credentialing Excellence (ICE). Accreditation is the process by which a credentialing or educational program is evaluated against defined standards by a third party and is awarded recognition when found in compliance with these standards. It’s more than just a voluntary membership in an association. Accreditation (and renewal of accreditation) involves a rigorous process that ensures the quality of examinations and certification offered by organizations like CCHI. In fact, NCCA accredited programs certify individuals in a wide range of professions and occupations, including nurses, pharmacists, counselors, EMTs, HR professionals, defense security specialists, and more. CCHI is proud to represent the healthcare interpreter profession as equal among other allied health professions.

ncca logoAs a 501(c)6 certifying body, CCHI has always recognized its obligation to follow not only the standards and best practices of the healthcare interpreting profession but also of the testing industry.

Today, CCHI is proud to offer the only nationally accredited certifications in the interpreting industry. NCCA’s accreditation validates all aspects of CCHI’s certification programs and CCHI as a certifying body:

  • solid governance and operations, which demonstrate full autonomy and independence of any undue influence from any other body;
  • financial and resource stability;
  • continued quality improvement;
  • security and confidentiality;
  • transparency and fairness to the profession and public.

As our Founding Chair Mara Youdelman, J.D., put it in 2012, when we became the first NCCA-accredited program in the interpreting industry, “Our NCCA accreditation journey began on the day CCHI was launched, July 15, 2009, because we were 100 percent committed to creating the best, most valid, most credible professional certification for healthcare interpreters, which directly benefits patient safety, healthcare providers, and interpreters who work in more than 139 languages.”

CCHI is dedicated to supporting professional interpreters who value the power of education and certification. CCHI offers special pricing to interpreters who hold a certification in interpreting or translation from another organization and wish to get certified with CCHI as well. These interpreters will have to meet out application requirements and passthe relevant exam(s). Click here for more information. #AddCCHI

 joy-world-medCCHI Certificants and Supporters,

2017 was a challenging and busy year for all of us. In a year of political upheavals, uncomfortable revelations, and natural disasters, many of interpreters that have been certified by CCHI were personally affected by hurricanes and fires this year. We hope the relief measures we offered helped in restoring their lives.

As healthcare interpreters, we all worry about changes in the U.S. healthcare system. Over 500 interpreters participated in the “Helping Ourselves While Helping Others: Civic Engagement Toolbox for Healthcare Interpreters” webinar, because for interpreters, standing on the sidelines is not an option if we want to be serious about language access in health care and the professionalization of the healthcare interpreting field.

2017 was also a year of growth. We are proud of our 3,300+ certified interpreters. Every time a healthcare interpreter decides to get certified is an opportunity for them to take their career to new heights.

In 2017, CCHI continued to support professional development of healthcare interpreters by offering free and low-cost continuing education (CE) webinars that are accessible to all interpreters, by maintaining a conference listing page, and by offering other educational resources on our website. CCHI has accredited numerous quality training programs and healthcare interpreter conferences through our CEAP program making the opportunity to obtain continuing education easier for interpreters both certified and on the path towards certification. Lastly, but most exciting of all, we had the opportunity to establish and award the first round of Discover Healthcare Interpreting scholarships to nine CoreCHI™ candidates. We will continue these activities in 2018.

As the CCHI Chair, I want to express special appreciation to our supporters: companies such as Fluency, Inc. and MARTTI, who helped launch the Discover Healthcare Interpreting Scholarship program. I am also grateful to our Commissioners who volunteer their time, efforts, and financial contributions, and to our webinar presenters who share their expertise with our community of interpreters, as well as to our dedicated staff and raters. Most of all, I am grateful to all our CHI™ and CoreCHI™ certified interpreters who have trusted CCHI – the first national healthcare interpreter certification program to earn accreditation by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA).

I anticipate that 2018 will be another busy year for CCHI. Among a few of the projects slated for 2018 is the CoreCHI™ enhancement and our new website. We invite you to get connected with us through our social media channels to stay informed and be the first to hear about opportunities to get involved!

I wish you all Happy Holidays! May 2018 bring you and your family joy, peace, and health.

 joy-world-medColleagues and friends of CCHI,

2016 was a difficult year for many of us, and we do not know what 2017 will bring. However, I know one thing, we have work to do!

Regardless of any changes that happen in the healthcare landscape, we will remain dedicated to our mission of administering a national, valid, credible, and vendor-neutral certification program.

We are committed to the professionalization of healthcare interpreting. It is our duty and pleasure to provide educational opportunities to all healthcare interpreters. As your Chair, I am excited to see the growth of our CEAP program. All of the trainers and presenters who are on board with CCHI deserve a special thank you from all of us.

I also want to thank every interpreter who became certified with us and every interpreter who put effort into continuing education in 2016. You are CCHI. What you do everyday benefits patients and healthcare providers in many incredible ways!

As this challenging year draws to a close, we at the Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters think about all we are grateful for. We are grateful for your support, trust, and loyalty. We are grateful for our growth and development as an organization which is responsive to the needs of our stakeholders.

On behalf of CCHI's Commissioners, staff, volunteers, continuing education providers, and advisers, I wish you and your loved ones a wonderful Holiday Season and a New Year full of peace, happiness, health, and professional growth.
