STEP 3: Apply for the CoreCHI™ Exam
Every healthcare interpreter needs their CCHI Core Certification Healthcare Interpreter™ (CoreCHI™) certification regardless of the language(s) in which they interpret. This is the entry point into professional certification. The CCHI Core Certification Healthcare Interpreter™ certification is the first certification, the foundation certification for all healthcare interpreters.
To be designated as a CCHI Core Certification Healthcare Interpreter™ (CoreCHI™) practitioner, interpreters need to:
- 1 Complete CCHI’s application that gathers information on the basic requirements for eligibility. The CCHI Application costs $35 to submit and provides a way for you to state that you meet these requirements.
- 2 Take and pass the CoreCHI™ Examination, a computer-based, 100-question, multiple-choice exam in English that covers the basics of healthcare interpreting and focuses on managing an interpreting encounter, healthcare terminology, interacting with other healthcare professionals, preparing for an interpreting encounter, and cultural responsiveness. The CoreCHI™ exam costs $175 and is offered year-round (no testing on Sundays). The exam fee is due at the same time as the application fee, i.e. at the time you submit your application.
